The ECOCAMPING Award
The ECOCAMPING award is presented to campsites that can demonstrate they meet the ECOCAMPING criteria for environmental and sustainability management. Compliance with the criteria is verified by an independent external on-site audit before the award is granted. Who awards and monitors the certification? The certification body is ECOCAMPING e.V. The independence and quality of the certification system are monitored by an independent advisory board, which, amongst other things, reviews the criteria every three years and determines the accreditation of auditors (details: ECOCAMPING Certification Advisory Board). How is compliance ensured? Award-winning sites must commit to ongoing compliance with the criteria via a licence agreement. Follow-up audits take place every three years; in the event of breaches, the award may be subject to conditions, suspended or withdrawn (details: ECOCAMPING Award).Development of the ECOCAMPING standard
The ECOCAMPING standard has been further developed on several occasions since 2000: from an individual environmental management approach, through an initial standardized set of criteria (2022), to the current, revised set of criteria (2026). Ever since the award was introduced in 2000, compliance with the applicable requirements has been verified through external on-site audits.
Award-winning establishments are transitioned to the current standard as part of the regular certification cycles. A transition period until 31 December 2027 has been set for the switch to the 2026 standard. Campsites that have not undergone recertification in accordance with the current set of criteria by this date will lose their entitlement to use the ECOCAMPING award; they will then no longer be listed as award-winning campsites on ECOCAMPS.de.
The certification status (certification basis) applicable to each individual campsite is shown on its profile page.
