Camping is trendy, is ecological and gives us a good holiday time. The most environmentally friendly campsites have been awarded the EU Ecolabel. On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the EU Ecolabel, we went on a trip and tried out how versatile sustainable camping is from June 21st to 24th, 2022.
A sustainable camping trip
Camping is a caravan or motorhome - or: traveling with a bicycle and tent trailer, water hiking with a canoe and staying overnight in a rented mobile home or traveling electrically with an electric car and roof tent.
Camping is versatile and offers countless vacation options. You can have a particularly sustainable holiday at campsites that have been awarded the EU Ecolabel . On this varied journey we took a close look at sustainability:
- What is behind the EU Ecolabel?
- What does sustainable camping look like?
- How do the hosts implement this?

The EU Ecolabel recognizes sustainable campsites
The EU Ecolabel has been recognizing environmentally friendly products and services throughout Europe for 30 years - including campsites. There are already eleven campsites in Germany that bear the seal. What they have in common is that they have implemented concrete measures for more sustainability in their companies and meet the strict criteria of the EU Ecolabel.
Newly awarded: Opportunity, Work and Perspectives (CAP) Rotach
The campsite from Friedrichshafen received the EU Ecolabel on June 21, 2022. The award was also the start of our journey. Environmental protection and equal opportunities go hand in hand at CAP Rotach . As an integrative company, it offers people with disabilities an opportunity, work and prospects (CAP). He receives the European Ecolabel for his commitment to environmental protection.

This is what sustainability looks like at the campsite:
Pure nature on Lake Constance : The sustainable adventure trip then led to the two flagship camps in Konstanz on western Lake Constance. Klausenhorn campsite and Mainau -Litzelstetten nature campsite were the first campsites on Lake Constance to receive the EU Ecolabel in spring 2022.
The Mainau-Litzelstetten nature campsite, which opened in spring 2021, has focused on environmental protection from the start. During the planning phase, particular focus was placed on the environmental impact of the campsite, which is located in a nature reserve. The heart of the square is a sanitary building made of local and untreated spruce wood in a zero-energy standard.

is the experienced (environmental) do-gooder - he has been showing for 25 years how environmental protection in camping is implemented and continuously improved. Many different species of birds find a nesting place here. The storks are already part of the Klausenhorn campsite and, like many guests, come back every year.

This is what the hosts do for sustainability
You can also find very committed camping entrepreneurs in the Middle Black Forest. The campsites in Freudenstadt and Dornstetten are among the EU ECOLABEL pioneers. Both campsites have now received an extension of the award for their environmental commitment.
Nature camping Langenwald
fits harmoniously into the natural terrain. Since 1974, the Eiermann family has been running the Natur-Camping Langenwald for the third generation on the former site of the Schleh sawmill. The family does everything themselves - from maintaining the grounds, to the loving wooden signage and the herb garden, to selling regional food in the farm shop.
They also created the nature trail themselves, where you can get to know the local flora and fauna up close.

The site also has its own museum about the former sawmill and the creation of the campsite - the tour is conducted by Grandmother Eiermann herself.

The Eiermann family relies entirely on individuality and has designed the entire area with native plants. No two plots are the same. If you look closely, you will even find silver thistles, a protected plant.
