Sustainable travel with your motorhome – tried and tested practical tips Part 2

Sustainable travel with your motorhome – tried and tested practical tips Part 2 - ECOCAMPS

In part 1 of our blog, RV holidaymakers learn how to plan their camping trip sustainably, how to save resources and money while driving, and much more.

Here, in part 2 of our blog, you can read how you can enjoy local food sustainably, how you can ensure cleanliness in an environmentally friendly and effective way and more:

Shop and enjoy regionally, avoid waste

Food produced locally often has a positive ecological footprint. It also often tastes better when it has been organically grown, grown slowly and processed with artisanal care.

Get to know your holiday destination through its culinary delights! Enjoy local delicacies, perhaps from the camping farm shop or the organic farmer next door? Discover where fruit, vegetables, milk, cheese specialties, local apple juice, beer or wine come from. This is what a (sustainable) holiday tastes like!

You can find out how you can save packaging and more in our blog Avoiding waste on camping holidays . Any waste that is still generated is disposed of separately. All ecocamps offer appropriate disposal stations for this. A clever, space-saving product idea for separating waste in your motorhome or caravan is the Resty from Frankana.

Cooking and grilling consciously

At the campsite it's just like at home - it's so easy to save energy in the kitchen. Every pot fits (and should) have a lid so that the heat doesn't escape upwards. The water should only just cover the food being cooked. That's enough and also saves energy and euros. For vegetables, potatoes, soups and even pasta, you don't need boiling water for the entire cooking time: That means turning off the camping stove soon after it has boiled and letting the delicacies cook gently with the lid closed. And when washing up in the camper van or in the bathroom, you can use warm water carefully and not let it run, for example.

For many, the highlight of a camping holiday is a cozy barbecue evening in front of the RV or caravan with family, friends or camping neighbors. Here, too, an electric grill can be an environmentally friendly, sustainable alternative to gas or charcoal (please check the wattage of the power connection at the campsite before grilling). If you prefer to grill with charcoal, you can find valuable tips on sustainable charcoal at Ökotest and Utopia .

Use ecological sanitary additives

They should be clean and hygienic, but not burden the environment and people with chemicals: mikiGREEN or Awiwa, for example, offer powerful, microbiologically effective Cleaners for cassette toilets, waste water tanks and pipes and additives for toilets and tanks .

Of course, the waste water at Ecocamps and many other camping and motorhome sites can be disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner. Nature and local sewage treatment plants will thank you if this waste water is not full of chemicals thanks to the ecological, microbiological additives.

For round trips by bus, holidays or the festival season, Werkhaus offers an easy-to-clean composting toilet (Goldeimer Klo to Go). It works without any chemicals or water and fits exactly under the seat.

Keep your motorhome (and yourself 😉 ) sustainably clean

You can get sustainable products for cleaning your camper or caravan, kitchen, bathroom, living area and outdoor area. They work and are affordable - for example from the Camping Collection by mikiGREEN , Frosch or Awiwa .

Campers pay attention to sustainability not only when it comes to camping and household cleaning products, rags, sponges or brushes and when washing textiles. You can also find a large selection of environmentally friendly products for personal care from manufacturers, drugstores or organic markets. The Truemorrow deodorant stick or toothpaste tablets from a packaging-free store are just two examples. Or you can simply make your own shampoo, toothpaste and more !

Trust the (reputable) seals too: The Siegelklarheit website of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development shows you a way through the “jungle” of sustainability certificates . There you can select according to product groups such as detergents and cleaning products, food and many more.

Conclusion: It is much easier than you think to travel more sustainably with your motorhome...
